Instead of dreaming about becoming Chief Minister, Captain should plan for political retirement

SERIES OF JOLTS TO CONGRESS CONTINUES IN MAJITHA, 60 CONGRESS FAMILIES JOIN SHIROMANI AKALI DAL IN THE PRESENCE OF BIKRAM MAJITHIA

Amritsar 28 January (Nirmal singh chohan) Punjab Revenue Minister Mr. Bikaram Singh Majithia welcoming 30 Congress families into the ShiromaniAkali Dal fold at village Jalalpuraand sohiyanhas said that NavjotSidhu has completely lost control over his tongue and mind after announcement by Rahul Gandhi to make Captain Amrinder Singh as Chief Ministerial Candidate.

Mr. Majithia has suggested Congress party to keep Sidhu’s mental state of mind intact one does not know when Sidhu starts calling Rahul as Pappu and Sonia Gandhi as Munni as Rahul Gandhi has spoiled all deals of Sidhu by announcing Captain as Chief Ministerial Candidate. He said that Sidhu is now in the state of uncertainty and he may even leave Congress any movement and run away to Bombay for his comedy shows.

Mr. Majithia said that Captain has a habit of giving baseless statements of threatening his political rivals but the brave people of Punjab are ready to form SAD-BJP alliance government for the third consecutive term putting a stamp on the development and communal harmony agenda.

Commenting on the AamAdami Party, Mr. Majithia said that AAP does not have any development agenda for the welfare of the Punjab and they are just making false promises and relying on negative propaganda. He further said that but the people of Punjab will not fall into such traps and tricks of the Anti Sikh and Anti Punjab Natwarlals of Delhi. Mr. Majithia also appealed to the people to make Mr. Rajinder Mohan Chinna victorious from the Amritsar LokSabh seat.

Earlier Mr. Majithia welcomed 60 Congress families of village Jalalpuraand sohiyaninto the ShiromaniAkali Dal fold which included Ravinder Singh, Santokh Singh, Gurdev Singh, Satnam Singh, Sarabjit Singh.

SGPC funds must be used on social cause and propagation

AMRITSAR 28 Jan:(Nirmal singh chohan)

Congress candidate for Amritsar Lok Sabha Gurjeet Singh Aujla suggested that funds of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) must strictly be spent upon social cause and propagation of Sikhism. He said that if he gets to represent Amritsar in parliament then he will surely bring up this issue in parliament and will get some law framed to enable the formation of state/central agency solely responsible to monitor the incoming and out going funds of SGPC. Aujla said that it is a well known fact that certain political groups unethically use or divert SGPC funds on their personal projects and plunder Guru's treasure.
He said that inspite of 10 SGPC secretaries, Badals created a new post for chief secretary to adjust their favourite. The audit of SGPC is also given to Kohli associates; a personal favourite of Badals who covers up all the nefarious activities carried out by Badal and company. Aujla further said that Badals have also captured lands which were dedicated for Sikh institutes that include Shri Guru Ramdas Institute of Medical Sciences, Valla, Miri Piri Academy. Aujla said that this is just a minor part of the long list therefore it gets mandatory for the Sikhs to intervene and save this institute from the clutches of Badals.

AAP releases photographs of Bikram Majithia with international druglord Satpreet Singh Satta Enough evidence to put Majithia behind bars - Shergill

Amritsar, 28th January (Nirmal singh chohan)

AAP State Legal Cell Head and party candidate from Majitha Himmat Singh Shergill released the photographs of Bikram Majithia with International Druglord Satpreet Singh Satta during a press conference held at Amritsar today. While interacting with the media persons, Shergill said that Aam Aadmi Party has always been vociferously speaking about the strong connections of Punjab Minister Bikram Majithia with the drug suppliers and this photograph is a corroborative evidence to prove this fact. Shergill said that while the other accused Bittu Aulakh has already admitted in his statement before the Enforcement Directorate that Majithia introduced Satta with Jagjit Chahal for supplying pseudoephedrine - synthetic drug and other raw material to him while Bikram Majithia has been denying the charges but these photographs have blown the lid and involvement of Bikram Majithia in drug trade stands exposed. Reading out the report of ED Shergill stated that Satta also acted as Majithia's election agent in 2007 and stated in his house.

While challenging Majithia to give up his security cover and surrendering the passport, Shergill said that Majithia was scared to move about in the public without the security as he is well aware of his misdeeds and is well informed about the fury within the public for his contribution in ruining the lives of several youngsters of Punjab by patronizing drug trade in State in general, and this border belt in particular. Narrating his experience with the old lady who lost her only son due to drugs, Shergill said people will never forgive Bikram Majithia for his evil designs.
Taking a jibe a Capt Amarinder Singh, Shergill said that Amarinder protected Bikram from CBI probe due to family relations and also did not utter a single word against him during the recent Congress rally in Majitha.

Reiterating the statement of AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal, Shergill said that AAP has concrete evidence against Majithia and will put him in jail soon after forming the government in Punjab.

On this occasion, MP candidate Upkar Singh Sandhu, Dr. Inderbir Singh Nijjer, Media Incharge (Majha Zone) Gurbhej Singh Sandhu, Jaskaran Bandesha State Vice President, Sukhdeep Singh Sidhu, Vijay Mehta, Sukhjinderjit Singh Pannu were also present.

Barack Obama's farewell speech: Gratitude, vigilance and grace mark POTUS' swansong

- Barack Obama at his farewell speech

On that note, let's start with a few facts:

One: There will be plenty of reports, opinion pieces, analyses and critiques written about a particular farewell address that was in the news on Wednesday morning.

Two: There will be so many that you won't have the time to read all of them this lifetime.

Three: The article you are about to read is the only that includes professional wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne Johnson, actor Chris Tucker and

President Barack Obama.

Four: Just saying.

And now on with the show.

President Barack Obama (it still feels slightly surreal to imagine that in a little over a week, there will be a 'former' tacked on to the start of that phrase) delivered a farewell address at Chicago's McCormick Place on Tuesday night (Wednesday morning IST) that was as high on emotion as it was rich with insight and pointers for the future. His delivery was as-always spot-on and the man has turned the art of switching from being a professorial figure to an avuncular one and right back, into a science. His final address as President of the United States was no exception. It would, however, be remiss of us not to go over one very key aspect.

But first, a little digression.

Anyone who watched World Wrestling Entertainment/Federation in the late 1990s-early 2000s will undoubtedly be familiar with Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. Before he began dabbling with the world of cinema, The Rock was known for the 'electrifying' (sorry, it could not be helped) promos he used to cut. And while the target of his ire varied from week to week and storyline to storyline, his delivery was a constant throughout his best years with the organisation. He would enter the ring, look around at his captive audience, flare his nostrils every so slightly, soak in the raucous cheers and chants and 'finally' (sorry again, but this one really couldn't be helped), in his own time, would speak.

A mild sense of déjà vu set in when Obama began his farewell speech, particularly in the way he took a moment to purse his lips, breathe in the adulation, drink in the applause and savour the appreciation from a crowd that had gathered to express their gratitude to a man for giving them eight years of his life. Not everything worked, as he was quick to point out and the American citizens may not have always agreed with him. Nevertheless, they were there to give him a warm send-off. And like Johnson's onscreen persona did every week, Obama too took his own time.

Perhaps he realised that after a breakneck eight years, it was finally time to take a little breather and slow things down for once.

"If I had told you eight years ago that America would reverse a great recession, reboot our auto industry, and unleash the longest stretch of job creation in our history... if I had told you that we would open up a new chapter with the Cuban people, shut down Iran's nuclear weapons programme without firing a shot, and take out the mastermind of 9/11... if I had told you that we would win marriage equality, and secure the right to health insurance for another 20 million of our fellow citizens — you might have said our sights were set a little too high."

Viewed together, that is a formidable stack of achievements that goes some way in underscoring just how breakneck the period between 20 January, 2009 and the present day has been. But he displayed a sense of mature humility by crediting the American people with all those achievements.

"That's what you did. You were the change. You answered people's hopes, and because of you, by almost every measure, America is a better, stronger place than it was when we started."
Maybe he said that because he is a genuinely humble person. Or maybe he said it because he was aware of the criticism to which he was leaving himself open.

As stated earlier, not everything worked. Just look at the rise of the Islamic State, which is unfortunately a product — whether directly or indirectly — of American policy. And while you wouldn't expect a farewell speech to list policy and governance failures, Obama didn't sidestep them either. He couched them rather succinctly in the part of his speech that dealt with threats to democracy.
1) "Democracy won't work without a sense that everyone has economic opportunity" — This can be interpreted as a nod to the Occupy movement and the rising discontent among the middle class.
2) "Race remains a potent and often divisive force in our society" — The Black Lives Matter movement and the series of incidents across the US that saw white people and black people kill each other appear to have been the focus of this section.
3) "Without some common baseline of facts; without a willingness to admit new information, and concede that your opponent is making a fair point, and that science and reason matter, we'll keep talking past each other, making common ground and compromise impossible" — As loud an clear an indictment of the post-truth movement as you could expect.
4) "The post-Second World War order is now being challenged — first, by violent fanatics who claim to speak for Islam; more recently by autocrats in foreign capitals who see free markets, open democracies, and civil society itself as a threat to their power" — Radical Islam and Russia appear to have been the target of this section.
5) "Democracy can buckle when we give in to fear. So just as we, as citizens, must remain vigilant against external aggression, we must guard against a weakening of the values that make us who we are" — Logically, the next threat Obama went into was that posed by Islamophobia and anti-immigration sentiment.
6) "Our democracy is threatened whenever we take it for granted. All of us, regardless of party, should throw ourselves into the task of rebuilding our democratic institutions" — This one can be seen as a reference both to the Republicans put off by the election of Trump and the disenfranchised Democrats still gutted at Bernie Sanders' inability to overcome Hillary Clinton. In a word, he seemed to be exhorting the people to 'organise'.
His set of six points served less as a critique or indictment than a set of guidelines for the future — professorial to the end. There were points where it felt like the last day of college. The exams are done and dusted, and it's the last time you're being addressed by the professor before you head out into the big bad world.

But while his manner and tone gave the speech the feel of a campaign pitch rather than a farewell speech, there was no gloating, no taking of credit, no insulting his detractors. Alongside vigilance (as described in the 'threats to democracy' section), gratitude seemed to be the underlying motif of Obama's speech. He teared up as he thanked his wife, his daughters and his 'brother' Vice-President Joe Biden, everyone who has worked alongside him and the American people at large.

But there was another interesting theme that emerged.

The problem with word clouds is that they often pick up frequently-used articles, prepositions, conjunctions and the like, which pours water on any efforts to analyse the contents of a section of text. In this scenario though, the results are very revealing. Take a look at the word cloud above depicting Obama's farewell speech. The most commonly used word was 'just' as in 'in just eight years' or 'just a piece of parchment' or 'not just misguided'. However, a deeper look at the word itself provides us with a very handy adjective for Obama and his presidency: 'Just'

Again, not everything went according to plan with the fallout from the Edward Snowden and Chelsea Manning affairs being two cases in point. But for the most part, as a politician, as a statesman, as the most powerful person on the planet, Obama's tenure can be quite accurately described as 'just'. From seeking equal marriage rights to batting for immigrants and taking on bullies at home and abroad, the legacy of the Obama presidency will be that it was largely a just one. And I can't find a better word to describe his fair and balanced speech either.

Sometime in the early 1990s, a skinny young comedian from Atlanta, Georgia called Chris Tucker took the stage at the Def Comedy Jam. He shared with his audience his view of what the the White House would be like if the US was to have a black president (NSFW video of the show).

A black brother will f*** up the White House. Like the grass won't be cut, dishes piled up, cousins running through the White House, cookouts, basketball going in the back, broken down cars all down to s**t in the driveway. A brother won't clean out the tub when he gets out of there. The president will get p**sed off somebody drank the whole bottle of Kool-Aid. A black president, he's too proud, ain't gonna have no bodyguard. A black president — he's gonna have a gun. Somebody tries to f*** him up, he f*** them (up), "Hey n*gga!" (mimics automatic gunfire). Like, "Damn! The president f***ed somebody up! Did you see that s**t, man?"
Hilarious and inappropriate in equal parts, the routine was obviously done with Tucker's tongue buried deep in his cheek, but the fact is that the US has had its first Black president.

The adoring crowd chanting "Four more years!" goes to show Barack TheRock Obama didn't do too bad at all.

England XI Warm-Up With Comprehensive Win Vs India A

India A lost the first practice game by three wickets to England XI at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Ambati Rayudu's century went in vain as India A lost to England XI on Tuesday.
The England XI side warmed up in comprehensive fashion as they registered a three-wicket victory over India A in the first of the two practice games, played at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Guided by Sam Billings, who top-scored for the visitors with 93, and thanks to an overall strong batting performance, England XI defeated India A with seven balls to spare. Having set a formidable 304/5, the home team could not defend the total as England XI won the game.
Chasing a target of 306, the visitors started well with both openers Jason Roy (62) and Alex Hales (40) striking a 95-run opening wicket stand.
After that Billings and wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler (46) combined well to take England closer to the target. Though Buttler got out, Billings got the support of Liam Dawson (41) and the duo more or less won the match for the English.
England stuttered a bit towards the end when they lost both Dawson and Billings, but only 15 runs away from the target and with three wickets in hand, the visitors reached home safely.
Chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav was the star of the show as he picked up 5/60 in his 10 overs for India A in a losing cause.
Earlier in the day, backed by a brilliant unbeaten century by Ambati Rayudu (100 retired out), India A reached a strong total of 304/5. Opener Shikhar Dhawan (63), comeback man Yuvraj Singh (56) and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (68 not out) also made useful half-centuries to take the home team beyond the 300-run mark.
Medium pacers David Willey (2/55) and Jake Ball (2/61) picked up two wickets each for the visiting team, who had won the toss and put India A in to bat.
India A did not start well as opening batsman Mandeep Singh (8) got out cheaply in the eighth over of the day. But Dhawan and Rayudu then combined well to put up a 111-run partnership for the second wicket.
Dhawan was slow but provided stability in his innings but after his wicket Yuvraj and Rayudu really upped the tempo.
Yuvraj hit six boundaries and two sixes at the small ground while Rayudu reached his century with the aid of 11 fours and a maximum.
Rayudu retired after scoring his century which brought out Dhoni, who recently stepped down as India captain before the start of the series.
When Yuvraj got out, Dhoni helped India A's momentum to take the home team beyond the 300-run mark with the help of eight boundaries and two sixes.
Both of Dhoni's sixes came in the last over which yielded 23 runs.

Old habits die hard. On Monday, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was amongst the first to come out for the practice session at the iconic Brabourne Stadium. As the rest of the squad members went about playing a customary football match, Dhoni too joined in and even scored a goal. Football, of course, was his first love.
Old habits die hard. After captaining India for nine years, Dhoni monitored the net session for around 30 minutes before finally padding up for a stint in the nets that lasted for close to two hours under lights.

England, who got thrashed 4-0 in the five-match Test series before Christmas last year in India, will like to gain the maximum from this match. Limited overs skipper Eoin Morgan knows that the Indians are a deadly lot in the shorter format of the game. The India A team is studded with IPL stars like Shikhar Dhawan, Yuvraj Singh, Hardik Pandya, Ambati Rayudu and Ashish Nehra.
The Cricket Club of India should see a full house. Entry for the day-night match is free.

Manish Sisodia in Punjab: Vote assuming Arvind Kejriwal will be CM

Sisodia dropped the K word while addressing a rally at Balongi village in Mohali when an AAP member on stage asked him who would be the party’s Chief Minister if it was voted to power.

Raising the stakes for the Assembly elections in Punjab, AAP leader and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said Tuesday that people of the state should cast their votes on February 4 “assuming that Arvind Kejriwal will be the Chief Minister of Punjab”. Sisodia, however, added that “whoever becomes the Chief Minister, it will be Kejriwal’s responsibility to ensure that all promises made during the election are fulfilled”.
Sisodia dropped the K word while addressing a rally at Balongi village in Mohali — his first in a series of meetings in Punjab — when an AAP member on stage asked him who would be the party’s Chief Minister if it was voted to power. Sisodia responded by saying that the people needed to elect the MLA first. “Narinder Shergill will become an MLA and then there will be a CM,” he said, adding that there was a need to make Punjab free of drugs, provide employment opportunities, and improve roads and the situation of farmers.
“I promise that Arvind Kejriwal will get all this work done,” said Sisodia. “Ek bhai ne abhi poocha ki AAP ka CM kaun hoga. Aap yeh maanke chalo ki Punjab ka mukhyamantri toh Arvind Kejriwal hone wala hai. Jo bhi mukhyamantri banein, lekin yeh Arvind Kejriwal ki zimmidari hai ki jo bhi vaade aapse karke ja rahe hai voh poore karvayeinge (A brother just asked me who will be AAP’s CM. You should assume that Arvind Kejriwal is going to be the CM of Punjab. Whoever becomes the CM, it will be the responsibility of Arvind Kejriwal to ensure that all promises made to you are fulfilled),” said Sisodia.
“We will not leave Punjab and sit in Delhi. Whatever promises we have made…. Arvind Kejriwal will fulfill all promises. I stand guarantee to that. You should vote assuming you are voting to make Arvind Kejriwal the Chief Minister. Vote in the name of Arvind Kejriwal,” said Sisodia.
He said that Kejriwal had stopped all other work and was working towards ensuring that Punjab is free from drugs. “He is giving all his time to Punjab. He knows that if Punjab’s youth do not get back to farming, trading or working in factories, then Punjab cannot stand on its feet,” said Sisodia.
Launching an attack on the Badals of the ruling SAD and Captain Amarinder Singh of Congress, Sisodia challenged both to speak about the work done during their tenures and compare that with what AAP has done in Delhi. He alleged that while AAP was promoting education and healthcare, the Badals were promoting drugs and unemployment.
“Seeing the gathering here, I feel that you are about to bring a revolution in Punjab. You have not come here to be a part of a rally. The real motive is to tell the Badals and Captains in Punjab that Punjab is not their personal property,” he said.
Terming Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal as “jumlebaaz”, Sisodia charged that both had made tall promises which they did not fulfill. “They have sucked the blood of people and now is the time to take revenge. Vote to remove Badal and Captain. Do not give Punjab back into their hands,” said Sisodia.

India Receives $130 Billion FDI In Two-And-A-Half Years: PM Modi

PM Modi, while addressing investors at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit here, also said that 'Make in India' initiative has become the "biggest brand" that the country has ever had.

PM Modi said that 'Make in India' has become the 'biggest brand' that the country has ever had.
Gandhinagar: With the government taking steps to improve business climate, total FDI inflows in the last two-and-a-half years have touched $130 billion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday.

PM Modi, while addressing investors at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit here, also said that 'Make in India' initiative has become the "biggest brand" that the country has ever had.

"The total FDI in the last two-and-a-half years have touched $130 billion.

"The FDI equity inflow in the last two financial years was 66 per cent higher as compared to previous two financial years. In fact, the total FDI inflows received during the last year have been the highest ever," he said.

He said the number of countries from where FDI is coming in, and the sectors in which they are being routed have also diversified in the last two years.

"India is now the leading recipient of capital investment in the Asia-Pacific. It also continues to be among the top ten countries globally in terms of FDI inflows," he added.

He also said that "the story does not end here as India has left every other country behind in terms of providing return on investment".

The government has liberalised FDI regime in many sectors and in various ways and India is today among the most open economies, PM Modi said.

"Creating an enabling environment for business, and attracting investments, is my top priority. We have to do this in order to create opportunities for our youth," he said.

Further the Prime Minister said India has placed the highest emphasis on ease of doing business.

"We have taken decisive steps to ease licensing processes, and rationalise provisions and procedures relating to clearances, returns, and inspections. We are monitoring implementation of hundreds of action points across various sectors, aimed at improving the regulatory framework. This is part of our promise of Good Governance," he added.

He said that India is moving closer to global best practices and day by day it is getting more and more integrated with the world.

"Our confidence has been boosted by the positive impact of our policies and practices. This also gives us the motivation to further simplify our processes to become the easiest place to do business," he said adding "every day, we are further rationalising our policies and procedures, to make it simple for businesses to establish and grow".
